...And then there was the Ad Industry

At age 11, his family moved to South Africa, and in his teens, Jon was playing in various original rock bands in Pretoria. In 1991, Jon turned pro and joined Jo Day’s band. Shortly thereafter, he started doing solo gigs all over Johannesburg.

In 1994, Jon started running a small music composition studio at Sonovision Studios in Sandton, and quickly started gaining a solid reputation as a composer of original music for commercials. In 1996, he started a songwriting/recording project with Deon du Toit which later became Toxic Shame. In 1997, Sonovision moved to Rivonia and Jon had a slightly bigger studio there. Continuing with jingles, he also started producing other bands, most notably Saron Gas (who would later become Seether), Liesl Graham and Jo Day.

In 2000, the first Toxic Shame album was completed and released, and in 2002 he produced and engineered the critically-acclaimed Jo Day “Icon” album, which gave birth to four successful radio singles. He also produced, engineered and co-wrote Toxic Shame’s Tender Loving Abuse album which featured the hit “Silent Movie”.

In 2002, Jon built a large studio on the same property as Sonovision, which was big enough and well-equipped enough to record bands playing live. In 2003, he recorded Jo Day’s “No Warning” album, Toxic Shame’s “Kicking And Screaming” album, as well as worked with numerous bands such as Old Mol, Kelvin Declined and Idle Moment. He also produced Scarlet Box’s first album.

During this period, the advertising music composed by Jon included BMW 6-series, Telkom’s Dog TV commercial, and MTN’s Y’ello Summer.

By 2006, Jon’s work was starting to get noticed and he produced, engineered, mixed and co-wrote the Jo Day “Princess” album, and was invited to mix The Awakening’s “Razor Burn”, as well as mix and co-produce New Academics’ “City of Strange”.

In 2008, Jon has recorded, mixed and produced no less than four albums: Scarlet Box “and the rest of us die out”, New Academics “The Apple”, Eden Michelle “Broken Truth” and Toxic Shame’s “Detox”. He also recorded and produced EPs with George Worthmore, Saving Silence and Rooi Willie.
